Another Sunrise, Another Skunk

Thursday, May 7, 2009, 4:00 am

Wednesday was another fairly uneventful day, but on Thursday Joshua took my for another walk. Because of my run in with the black and white cat Joshua decided to take me to a completely different beach. I was not unfamiliarly territory however, it was the same area where we crossed over to spoon island. After leaving the van Joshua and I headed down the beach. When we got to the place where Joshua shared the boiled egg with me on the spoon island trip he stopped and started building a fire.

I decided to explore the surrounding territory, while Joshua started taking pictures of the sunrise.

When I arrived back, Joshua was siting on front of the fire with a cup of hot chocolate in his hand.

I was about the jump on him when, he picked up a rock with his other hand and throw it across the beach. I quickly ran after It.

After he had finish his cup of hot chocolate he took a couple more pictures of the sunrise.

Then he and I headed further down the beach.

After a short walk, we climbed onto a rocky ledge.

Joshua took more pictures of the scenery, while I explored the surrounding woods.

I came out of the woods the check on Joshua.

After warmly greeting him, I sat down beside him for a rest.

Joshua took one more picture of the sunrise, before heading further down the beach.

Following a four wheeler trail, we left the beach and walked to the top of a cliff.

Joshua took a couple more pictures of the sunrise.

The alarm clock on Joshua's cell phone rang and we headed back.

Joshua followed the beach, while I took the unmarked trail across the cliffs.

When he reach the spot where his campfire was, Joshua began calling me.

I quickly ran onto the beach to meet him.

I followed him down the beach for a while.

Then smelling a familiar smell, I preceded to the woods to investigate.

Joshua immediately started calling me, as he walked along the beach taking pictures.

Joshua wasn't to far off to quickly catch up, so I continued my investigation. I ground around me was covered with this interesting smell. I examined it carefully with my nose. Hearing Joshua's whistle and realizing he was already across the stream I decided it was time to catch up with him.

At first he seemed excited to see me coming, but as I got closer he seemed frustrated with me.

I spent the rest of the walk to the van on my leashWhen we got home Joshua took me and my kennel to the playhouse garage. Soon me and my kennel were moved outside and covered with a tarp. I spent most of the day there. In the evening I was put through the torture of another bath and allowed in the house, but had to sleep in the basement. I wasn't alone though. Andrew spent the night with me.It wasn't until the next day that my kennel was put back in the house.Humans don't really understand the purpose for the sense of smell. To a human smells are something to be enjoyed if they are pleasant, or gotten rid of if they are not. However to a dog, smells are information, a means by which we explore the world around us.You can tell a lot about something, or someones smell, where it or they have been, who it, or they have been with, and countless other details. When you wash or clean someone or something, you erase much of the valuable information, leaving only the fact they, or it was cleaned and which cleaners were used. But lets face it. humans are just hard to understand. I am firmly convinced that a dog could spend his, or her entire life and still not fully understand their human.I guess thats probably why weaker animals such as cats, give up and simple write them off as servants.
